赤いクロイ: Akai Kuroi

The eccentric Pascal family is packing up and moving to Japan. Sixteen-year-old Chloe is used to being unknown and disconnected, but sticking out like a sore thumb in a culture where everyone else blends together so smoothly may be too much even for her. What surprises will her new Japanese classmates have surprises in store for her?

Akai Kuroi is a fictional story, but it's based on my real experiences in Japan, first as a high school exchange student, then living in Japan after college—I'm currently teaching at a high school here on the JET Program. (If you'd like to know more about my real adventures in Japan, take a look here.)

I began this story (originally called Aka-chan in Nihon, named before I knew akachan means baby in Japanese!) in 1998, when I was a high school student who had never even been to Japan. As you might imagine, it's changed a bit since then. ;) I haven't worked on this story in a while, but I hope to write a new version of it when I get home and have had a little time to reflect on my experience working at a high school in Japan. For now, though, if you're interested, you can take a look at the version I started in 2002, when I was in college. I have four chapters written of that, and though it fails to pick up on an exciting plot, the characters are kinda fun (in my humble opinion), and it's sure to interest anyone who might be doing a Japanese high school exchange, or maybe even future JETs. Chapter Three is closely based on the first day of my high-school homestay experience.
